“With Of Desire, I am building on my trajectory of increasingly interdisciplinary work that spills offstage and oozes beyond proscenium to create a large-scale manifestation of vision that refuses to be limited by pragmatism and historic inequity. Through my art, specifically with Of Desire, I say “no” to limited thinking and “yes” to bold imagination and to Black fantasy. Of Desire is an assertion of our right to thriving, to imagination, and to whimsy rather than be subject only to surviving. It is not a plea to white people to recognize the humanity of people of color, to share our grief, or to sensationalize our deaths. Of Desire boldly and simply centers us.” – Maria Bauman
